GitHub deprecates six Copilot models effective October 19

GitHub Copilot: model retirement

GitHub deprecated six models on October 19, 2026, across most Copilot experiences, including chat, inline edits, ask and agent modes, and code completions. The change takes effect following an announcement on September 18.

GitHub recommends Gemini 3.8 Flash for Gemini 3.7 Flash, and GPT-6.1 Sol for both GPT-5.5 and GPT-5.4. Its suggested replacement for GPT-5.4 mini and GPT-5 mini is GPT-6 Luna; for Grok 4.5, it recommends Grok 4.7.

Developers should update workflows and integrations to use supported models. Copilot Enterprise administrators may need to enable alternatives through model policies. Enabled models appear in the Copilot Chat selector in VS Code and on github.com. No manual action is needed to remove deprecated models.
