Fedora has announced a switch to kmscon for virtual consoles tty1–tty6 starting with version 45. A userspace program will handle the terminal instead of the kernel’s fbcon implementation, adding font scaling, FreeType rendering, scrolling and basic mouse support. The supplied article does not establish that Fedora 45 has reached stable release.
Administrators should check scripts: tty now returns a path such as /dev/pts/0 instead of /dev/tty1. Starting a graphical session or an application that needs the GPU requires the kmscon-launch-gui wrapper to release the graphics device.
The familiar setfont and loadkeys commands do not control kmscon; keyboard layouts are managed through localectl. Administrators can retain fbcon on an individual console by disabling its kmscon service and enabling getty.
